Shwmae Day

October 15, 2013 will be the first time that we celebrate Shwmae Su’mae? Day starting every conversation in Welsh.
2013Diwrnod_Shwm101341
Shwmae Su’mae? Day is a golden opportunity to celebrate the Welsh language through the ways we greet each other in Welsh in our communities. It is also an opportunity to support and encourage the efforts of all who are currently learning Welsh.

The Welsh language belongs to everyone and we can all use the language everywhere! In the shop, youth club, work, in our community, with friends.

So celebrate the day. Try it! Have a go! Come and say Shwmae! to some of the area’s Welsh organizations at Bridgend and Porthcawl. We will be greeting you along with harpist Elin y Delyn at the locations listed:

Bridgend Town Centre: 09:30 – 11:30
John Street, Porthcawl: 14:00 – 16:00

There will also be a chance to win a prize at Siop yr Hen Bont on the day! Menter Bro Ogwr will reward the fiftieth person to come into the Shop and start the conversation by saying Shwmae!

Summer Play-Scheme 2013

cynllun_haf_2013091332This year, we had high attendance rates again in our Summer play-scheme, with over seventy individuals attending the play-scheme over the four weeks it was held. The play-scheme was held in Pendre Hall, YGG Cwm Garw, YGG Y Ferch o’r Sger , and in Maesteg, and we would like to thank the schools for their constant support, and also to all the children who attended the play-shceme! Fun was had by all!

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition August 2013

I’d like to say a huge congratulations to the first Duke of Edinburgh group from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd on completing their Bronze Award Expedition through Menter Bro Ogwr. The group have been working very hard over the past few months in order to complete the necessary training before the Expedition, and not to mention studying for their GCSEs at the same time!

Over the weekend, the group walked from the Monknash area, Vale of Glamorgan, all the way to Barry, staying over night in Happy Jakes campsite, Flemingston. They had an extremely warm welcome at Happy Jakes, from the very supportive owners, who were delighted that the young people were staying there as part of their expedition.

I would also like to thank Rhys Pinner, who has been volunteering his time to help train the first group, and is already looking forward to working with the new group in September.

It’s fair to say that everyone was looking forward to a good night’s sleep on Saturday night! However, on behalf of Menter Bro Ogwr, I would like to say how proud we are of you all: Tomos Hopkins, Ben Isaac, Sam Turton, Catrin Haf Jones, Catrin Masson, a Ffion Masson…well done!
