#WelshLanguageMusicDay – Celebrating Welsh language Music

#DyddMiwsigCymru2

February 12, 2016 is Dydd Miwsig Cymru / Welsh language Music Day – a day for all to celebrate Welsh music through various activities leading up to the Selar Welsh music awards on February 20, 2016.

Backed by some of Wales’ top musicians and the music industry, the project will raise awareness of, and celebrate almost 50 years of great Welsh music.

Anyone can be part of the celebrations, from shops and cafes to schools and colleges by holding competitions, raising awareness and encouraging young people to listen, enjoy and participate in by organising or attending gigs. Digital packs will be made available to schools and education institutions to help with arrangements. Anyone can support the campaign by sharing on social media as well.

You can also support #WelshLanguageMusicDay by sharing your favorite Welsh song on social media with #Tiwn

Gwenno, Singer

I’ve rediscovered Welsh language music in the last few years, and realised the wealth of what’s out there. This has been a huge influence on me and has given me the confidence to express myself creatively through the medium of Welsh, my first language.

Mike Williams, Editor in Chief NME

I loved how less formal the language was in song than in school. As someone from an English-speaking family, that gave me more confidence in expressing myself in Welsh.

Osian, Candelas

My life has always existed around Welsh music to be honest. It’s enabled me to be a professional(ish) musician and I don’t know if I would have had half the opportunities I’ve had singing in another language!

Here are 5 ways you can celebrate#DyddMiwsigCymru #WelshLanguageMusicDay

Did you celebrate Saint Dwynwen’s Day this year? At Menter Bro Ogwr we celebrated in our Siop Siarad, Youth Club and at a special event at Bryngarw Park.

A lot of fun was had trying to guess the famous Welsh in our Welsh lonely hearts column in the Siop Siarad as well as a general discussion about Love. On Monday, there was a ‘Mr and Mrs’ style competition where friends were able to show off how well they really knew each other.

On Saturday, the 23rd of January, we held an event in partnership with Mudiad Meithrin, Tyfu and Bryngarw Park by offering Arts and Crafts activities, information stalls and a stall by Siop yr Hen Bont Welsh shop in the visitor centre. The family event was a great success with a number of people having a go at making a lovespoon out of clay and more!

Thanks to everyone who came to the events and hope you all had a lovely Saint Dwynwen’s day!

Performance of Burning Monkey

5 October, Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, 1pm

A performance of Burning Monkey has been organised by Menter Bro Ogwr at the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl on the 5th of October 2015 at 1pm, with a 20 minute informal discussion at the end of the performance.

If anyone is interested then you must book tickets by 30 September by phoning Menter Bro Ogwr’s office: 01656 732200

Burning Monkey by Sera Moore Williams is a compelling drama that raises important issues for teenagers, addressing themes such as war, violence, separated families and responsibilities.

In the background, the presence of war looms; the character of Old is haunted by his memories of his time as a soldier and the character of Monkey looks forward to the time when he can escape the depressing realities of his life and join the army. In the midst of this, Shell is fifteen, madly in love with Monkey, and pregnant with his child.

The style of drama is direct with humour throughout which is typical of the company’s work for young audiences. Please note that this drama is one of the titles for GCSE Drama and also appropriate for PSE lessons.
