On Tuesday, 24 June at 7pm in Bridgend Rugby Club, the borough will officially invite the Urdd National Eisteddfod to the area in 2017.

Local Councils, Public Bodies, Voluntary Organisations and Societies and the public are invited to an open meeting to discuss the invitation for the Eisteddfod to visit the area in 2017.

Efa Gruffudd Jones, Urdd Chief Executive, Aled Sion, Director of the Eisteddfod, Dyfrig Davies, Chair of the Eisteddfod Board, and a representative from Bridgend Borough Council  will be present at the meeting.

This will be the first meeting between the Urdd Eisteddfod and the people of Bridgend and if everyone agrees to invite the Eisteddfod, the Urdd will then ask for nominees to join the Executive Committee and work will start on forming syllabus committees for the Eisteddfod.

Efa Gruffudd Jones, Chief Executive of the Urdd said, “Local Urdd volunteers and the Council have already showed their support and commitment to the Eisteddfod and we look forward to meeting the local people with the hope of bringing our national event to the Bridgend Borough in 2017.”

Aled Sion, Director of the Eisteddfod added, “The main aim of this meeting is to get the societies, organisations, local councils and residents’ seal of approval for the Urdd Eisteddfod to visit the area in 2017. The Urdd Eisteddfod has not been held in the area since 1979 when it was held in Maesteg and it would be great to bring our National Eisteddfod to this corner of WalLogo'r_Urddes once again.”

Come and celebrate the Old New Year with Menter Bro Ogwr and the Mari Lwyd!

The Mari Lwyd tradition is a New Year ritual which has strong connections with Bridgend County, in particular the village of Llangynwyd, Maesteg. A decorated horse skull is carried from house to house. On arrival at the door of a house, the party challenge the people inside to a battle of rhyming verses called pwnco, in order to gain entry.

The Mari Lwyd will be visiting the Corner House Inn, Llangynwyd on Monday, the 13th of January 2014. The night will start at 7:30 and a folk session will follow. All are welcome to listen, sing or play!
